In 1988, while on a trip to Bolivia, Didier Perréol discovered quinoa, the Incas’ sacred cereal. He brought this little known treasure back to France and made it his mission to encourage French people to like it. In 1989, he founded Ekibio and launched the Priméal brand, which was driven by this pioneering spirit. 

The brand’s main goal was to promote and pass on the pleasures and benefits of plant-based food. In an effort to reveal all the possible benefits, Priméal added to its 100% organic and plant-based product range year after year. 

This is how, across generations, the brand encouraged its consumers to adopt a healthy and happy lifestyle.

PRIMÉAL, A BRAND THAT IS COMMITTED TO FAIR-TRADE AND SOLIDARITY-BASED PARTNERSHIPS   

Driven by the company Ekibio, Priméal has contributed to the development and promotion of the organic, fair-trade and solidarity-based partnerships in France and Bolivia over the past 30 years. Through this initiative, the brand helps its farming partners in their development and is therefore guaranteed the top-quality farm produce it requires to be able to offer innovative, tasty products. By 2022, Priméal will be working with 13 producer partnerships, all fair-trade and all solidarity-based.

A BRAND COMMITTED TO LOCAL SUPPLY CHAINS AND BIODIVERSITY

Priméal combines the joy of eating and the joy of taking action for the planet by choosing local ingredients for its brands and supporting biodiversity across France.
Today, more than 30% of the brand’s turnover comes from 100% French brands, 170 products to be exact.

It all began 20 years ago with a forgotten ancient cereal: Haute-Provence spelt. Then came chestnut from Ardèche, and organic rice from Camargue: 3 crops that now benefit from protected origin thanks to the PGI and PDO labels.

The brand manufactures 3/4 of its products on its 9 production sites in France, helping to reduce distances and ensuring proximity to the producers.

PRIMÉAL, ACTIVELY REDUCING PACKAGING

For several years now, Priméal has been working to minimise their impact on the environment, especially by making the right choices in terms of packaging: cardboard that is either recycled or from sustainably managed forests, less packaging, and the development of the more eco-responsible ‘buy-per-kilo’ offer. 
By the end of 2021, Priméal will offer recyclable plastic packaging for 150 cereal, legume, grain, semolina and rice product references.
